Woolacombe is a small, coastal resort in North Devon, with a large, sandy beach (with Blue Flag award for cleanliness) popular with surfers because of its north coast location. The village derives its name from the ‘combe’ (or valley) which it lies at the mouth of. Along with other nearby beaches, like Croyde and Ilfracombe, Woolacombe is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, boasting impressive cliffs and coastal scenery.
As with many of the area’s popular tourist locations Woolacombe is very quiet out of season, but come the summer months visitors flock to the area, attracted by the beautiful sandy beaches, great surfing and wide range of good quality accommodation. Across the bay from Woolacombe lies Lundy Island which is well worth a visit. Regular boat trips are available from the nearby towns of Bideford and Ilfracombe.
Access is mainly by road, with the railway branch line which once served the area having closed in 1970. There are bus services from nearby towns such as Barnstaple and Combe Martin, and with the village being set along the coastal path there are opportunities both for walking and also horse riding at a number of nearby facilities. Another attraction is the crazy golf in the village centre which is notable for featuring model buildings depicting a variety of local landmarks and locations.
